The ‘Unplugged in Stornoway’ event is being organised by CodeBase, who run the Scottish Government’s technology startup programme Techscaler. The event takes place at The Croft Room, Caladh Inn between 5 and 7pm and can be attended in person or online.
Anyone interested in the tech startup scene, from seasoned entrepreneurs, tech professionals, creatives, students, and anyone else with an interest in startups, is invited to attend. Participants will learn more about the opportunities available to entrepreneurs in the Highlands and Islands through Techscaler.
Mark Sutherland, head of regional engagement for Techscaler in the Highlands and Islands, said:
“We’re excited to bring Techscaler to Stornoway and the Western Isles, a vibrant community with tremendous potential for innovation and growth. The event is a great opportunity to connect with local tech founders, enthusiasts and stakeholders, and introduce them to the resources and support that Techscaler offers. We believe that by fostering these connections and providing the right tools, we can help the next generation of tech leaders in the Highlands and Islands thrive.”
The event will include the launch of a new Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) Techscaler Kickstart grant scheme. This will run until March 2025 and offer grants of £5,000 to £10,000 to help ambitious tech founders and entrepreneurs develop their ideas for business applications.
Rachel Hunter, HIE director of enterprise and community support, said:
“The creative application of technology is a key driver of business growth and can be particularly impactful in rural areas. We’re delighted to be working with CodeBase to support Techscaler clients by providing a grant scheme that will complement the support on offer and look forward to meeting existing and potential tech entrepreneurs in Stornoway.”
Regional engagement is a cornerstone of the Techscaler programme, ensuring that startup activity and success is accessible to innovators and entrepreneurs across Scotland. Techscaler membership in the Highlands and Islands has increased by 70% this year to more than 50 members. Events like ‘Unplugged Stornoway’ are part of a wider plan by CodeBase to strengthen the regional tech ecosystem in the region, fostering connections and opportunities that can catalyse growth and innovation.
